Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on helping people develop psychological flexibility. The term “flexibility” may sound odd in the context of psychotherapy, but it is actually a very descriptive term. Psychological flexibility refers to one’s ability to contact the present moment fully as a conscious human being and to persist in or change behaviour in the service of what is important to the individual, i.e. one’s values. ACT has two major goals at its core: the acceptance of unwanted private experiences which are out of personal control and committed action toward living a valued life. In other words, the ability to experience whatever emotions, thoughts or physical sensations arise while one is doing something that’s important and to continue on the path. If you feel “stuck” or find yourself repeating old patterns, it may be an indication of psychological inflexibility in a particular area. An acceptance approach does not abandon efforts to change, it’s not about resignation, but rather it targets efforts toward things over which we have more ability to change, such as overt behaviour or life situations, rather than personal history or automatic thoughts and feelings.
Person Centered Therapy
This type of counselling deals with the ways in which people perceive themselves consciously rather than having a counsellor try to interpret unconscious thoughts or ideas. There are many different components and tools used in person-centered counselling, including active listening genuineness, paraphrasing, and more. The real point is that the client already has the answers to the problems and the job of the counsellor is to listen without making any judgements, without giving advice, and simply help the client feel accepted and understand their own feelings.
Counselling is not only about looking at the past, it is also about building a sustainable future that is spiritually, intellectually and emotionally fulfilling. This may require an exploration of the transpersonal as well as the attitudes, behaviours and feelings associated with everyday experience.
